If you’ve grown weary of the political chaos Donald Trump creates on a daily basis, I know how you feel.
I also know you and I can’t give in to that feeling, and here’s why.
Hillary Clinton was vilified by Democrats, Republicans, and independents for using the term “deplorables” in describing some of Trump’s supporters, but, as it turns out, she was right all along.
The fact that most people still don’t want to admit that doesn’t change the fact that millions of the people who believe every word Trump utters and who would folloow him off a cliff deserve the label “deplorable.”
These are people who have no respect for respect, don’t value values, think thinking is for elites, hold the opinion that opinions are facts, and believe lies are truth and truth is a lie.
Simply stated, “deplorables” are not very nice people. They are like the four guys at a Twins baseball game a friend sat near who drank and yelled and used vile profanity as if they were the only people in the stadium.
“Deplorables” who attend Trump rallies hold up their middle finger at the news media (as they did in Tampa), still yell “lock her up” when Trump mentions Hillary’s name, and still believe Trump when he says President Obama was a Muslim who is responsible for the rise of ISIS.
“Deplorables” are the people who cheer their approval when Trump tells one lie after another, especially when he calls the Mueller investigation a “witch hunt.”
They’re the people whose behavior prompted CNN’s reporter, Jim Acosta, to say after the Tampa rally that if Trump keeps inciting the crowds with anti-media rhetoric “somebody’s going to get hurt.”
Trump has so emboldened them that “deplorables” are dangerous to reporters and equally dangerous for the country.
What is even more astounding to me, though, is that many of them believe they are “Christians,” which says a lot about what churches have been teaching, but that’s another subject.
If all the above were not enough, Trump Republicans who don’t fit the label “deplorable,” and in fact wouldn’t be caught dead associating with them, by virtue of their support for Trump are “deplorable” enablers.
So this is what is happening to America, and it is why none of us can afford to allow ourselves to be worn down to the point of not paying attention.
That would give Trump exactly what he wants, his opposition sitting on the sidelines while he revs up his base to keep supporting him.
Working in his favor is the fact that progressives want to play nice with Trump voters, as if they are just exercising their rights as American citizens.
That kind of thinking is as dangerous as it is naive. Freedoms can be used in bad ways that do immense damage to our country, and that is what is going on right now.
Supporting Trump is not simply a political right. It is profoundly anti-American, something they have a right to do, but not without consequences, one of which is to face severe criticism from the rest of us.
To sit by and watch people destroy us from within is not being tolerant. It is being irresponsible.
Trump’s words and actions are doing immense harm. The fact that he lies at will is in itself enough to reject him as the legitimate leader of the country.
So, no, this is not a time to hide behind respecting other people’s right to support Trump as if that is a reasonable point of view.
In another era it was called “appeasement.” The threat we are under convinces me that it is still appeasement to minimize the crisis we are in and the dangers we are facing.
And that brings us back to the beginning.
Even as weary as all of this Trump chaos is, the rest of us cannot, must not, let what is happening stand.
It is our solemn duty to fight it by staying informed and ready to speak and act at a moment’s notice, as if we had taken a sworn oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the Unites States, so help us God.
Let’s just hope God will in fact empower us with the courage we need to do our best.
