This moment is one that everyone who despises all things Trump hoped would come.

Donald Trump is undergoing a public humiliation bigger and faster than we dreamed possible when he took office again less than two years ago.

His numbers across multiple polls have hit record lows.

All signs point to the fact that his bigger than life ego, his total incompetence, his astounding personal corruption, his abject disregard for everything decent and morally right, his disdain for a government of, by, and for the people have caught up with him.

The majority of Americans are finally seeing Trump for who he is, in fact, who he has always been.

Polls, of course, are ephemeral, up and down, often reflecting ever-changing circumstances. but I suggest not this time. It is true that Trump is a president unlike anything we have seen before, but that is precisely why he will not recover from his decline.

A leopard cannot change his spots, nor can Trump (my apologies to leopards everywhere).

What makes Trump the awful president he is are the same qualities that make him the awful person he is, and there is nothing he can do to change that.  

He cannot be smarter, more competent, less corrupt, less ego driven than he is because, as we said, this is who he is, and that is what people now see.

Issues like the economy and the Iranian war matter, but their root cause is grounded in the person he is.

And who he is speaks failure. In point of fact, Trump has failed at everything he has ever tried to do. Had he not inherited millions from his father, we would have never heard of him.

His record of business bankruptcies and business failures is stunning. The Apprentice television show bailed him out financially.

The people who actually believed he was sufficiently competent to be President lied to themselves and betrayed their country. Their actions turbo-charged his egocentrism, making him feel invincible, all powerful, unstoppable.

What we are now witnessing is the unraveling of a man in a position he should not be in, but with the authority to do catastrophic harm.

In a historic irony, because of who he is a day of reckoning has dawned. That it is better late than never coming is small consolation, but it is consolation nonetheless. The horrible mistake made nearly two years ago is not beyond redemption.

In less than two months all of us can unite behind the principles and ideals on which our nation was founded and defeat the Republican majorities in the House and Senate that are currently serving Trump instead of the Constitution.

What the Republicans in Congress have not done to serve the nation instead of Trump is appalling and unAmerican. Whatever they or their defenders say, their actions and lack thereof are an irrefutable betrayal of their oath of office, the worse example in our history of deliberate complicity in evil.

As former Congressman Adam Kinzinger recently wrote, “There is no seat, no committee, no appointment, and no political future worth the trade off of being silent on your oath to the Constitution when the current president violates it so frequently.”

Every current Republican member of the House and Senate has ignored that truth, and the moment is now for us to hold them accountable. Waiting for them to regain their integrity or courage is not only unjustified, it is hopelessly naïve. They cannot regain what they never had in the first place.

This is not something to be taken lightly. Our November vote will likely be the last chance we have to avert a world-wide catastrophe.

Nobel Prize winning psychiatrist, Dr. Henry Abraham, who previously joined colleagues in issuing a warning about the dangers of Trump being in control of the nation’s nuclear codes said that he believes since that warning things have gotten worse because no one with power is willing to hold Trump accountable,

“I mean, if an airline pilot had half of the symptoms that the president of the United States has, we would not let him on an airplane; we certainly wouldn’t want to fly with him…and yet, we have a system which enfolds the president’s health in a shroud of secrecy.” (Lee Moran article, Huffington Post, 9/3/26).

Removing Trump is, of course, a remote possibility, but taking majority rule away from Republicans in the House and Senate so Congress will exercise its right and duty to provide oversight of the Executive branch is not only possible, it lies within our power to make happen.

It’s simple, but true. We dug the hole we are in ourselves. In two months we will have the opportunity to begin digging ourselves out.  

It would not only be irresponsible for us not to do so. It would be reprehensibly immoral.
