Since someone asked about it I want to let everyone who reads my Blog know that starting with yesterday’s post on Nepal I have stopped posting my Blog on Facebook.
It’s not that I never will again, only that with rare exception Blogs seem to me to be something people should choose to read rather than having it imposed on them. I know that choice is available on Facebook, but lately I have been feeling like posting it is essentially immodest. Wanting people to read what you write may seem like the obvious reason people do it, but while that is a hope, it is not the reason writers write. We write because we have to. I have several books on my computer that will never see the light of day, but I needed to write them anyway.
So my Blog is a practical way to share what I would write anyway with those of you who have chosen to follow it. Thank you for being one of them. You are all the audience I need.
Jan, I understand your insight and perspective. Please keep the blog site going. We faithful followers will be there! Thanks for all your valuable work and sincere efforts to “make a difference.” Va
Virginia, I will keep Blogging for sure. Thank you for the encouragement.
Good decision, my friend….
As you well know, I consider Facebook to be the biggest waste of time in the history of human communications. It is largely a site for self-serving, “look at me and mine” posts by the bored, the restless and the lonely (sad in that regard).
Your wise and insightful posts deserve a more focused and meaningful forum.
I figured that decision would be one you would support. I might have had to rethink it had you not done so.
While I disagree with Bill’s opinion of Facebook(which he expresses often) for the majority of people(of course there are lots for whom the shoe fits), and think it is a quick and easy way to share important information–including announcing important events, I do understand your point of view, Jan. I am your faithful follower, but need to be reminded when you write your blogs. Thanks!
Kay, I think you and Bill are both right about Facebook. I figure most of the people who want to read what I have to say already read the Blog. I will be glad for others to join in.
I’ll do my part and keep reading your blog as long as you do your part and keep writing!
All my best…
You have a deal, Dirk!
I will continue reading your insightful blog!
I’m not now, and don ‘t expect to be in the future, a Facebook user. I never figured out why it is of any value to me. Some of the comments above list reasons why I’m not on Facebook. So I won’t miss your blogs not being on Facebook, but they are important to me on my trusty pc. I appreciate your effort in producing them. THANKS!
Thanks, Wally. I write for readers like you.
I have mixed feelings about Facebook, but have to say, without it, I would not have reconnected with high school classmates, found out about your blog, and had a chance to meet you last month (thanks to Kay Vaughan!). I’ll continue to read and appreciate!
None of us wants to argue the pros and cons of Facebook on Jan’s space, but…
I feel the use of Facebook can be compared to the use of alcohol: moderation and responsibility are the keys. Everyone has his/her own reason for participating on Facebook(and Judy Foster:re-connecting with you and Sue is a definite pro), and as we can choose what we read/post, I’m not sure it is fair to judge those who do participate. Having said that, I choose to continue to read Jan’s informative, well-written blogs WHEREVER they are, and choose NOT to read the posts/ blogs of angry/negative/boring people.
I may follow this advice. Happy to be a reader!
