Day seven of the Republican shutdown. It is theirs, by the way. No one else’s.
On Face The Nation yesterday Texas Senator John Cornyn claimed that Obamacare has serious problems, to which Face The Nation host, Bob Schieffer, responded, “But, Senator, that is beside the point.”
Indeed, everything Republicans are saying is beside the point. They keep insisting Obamacare is the sticking point for funding the government as if their position makes sense. It doesn’t because they are using extortion (or what I call economic terrorism) to try to get their way. Criminals think this way. Their view of reality is so skewed they cannot see the forest for the trees. Republicans remind me of the criminals on the new television show, “Hostages.” The story line is they are holding the family of a doctor who is supposed to operate on the president hostage so she will make sure the president dies on the table. We don’t yet know why they are doing what they are doing, but we do know it is wrong, in fact, criminal.
This is the way Republicans are acting, threatening the very lives of children in medical trials to get their way, the lives of the elderly who get Meals on Wheels, the lives of workers who could lose their home if they cannot pay their mortgage. These are the kinds of real life casualties a government shutdown is causing. It is wrong, in fact, criminal.
But hey, when your goal is to make political points against a president you hate, you don’t care about other people. You care only about yourself. Would that these selfish politicians who are sowing to the wind would because of their actions reap the whirlwind when they face re-election.
Jan, you have put this and your other posts in a perspective that we can all understand and see the truth. Let’s hope that the flatlined consciences of our elected officials soon will pulsate and they too can see the detriment they are shifting to the nation!
Thanks, Virginia. I love your phrase, “flatlined consciences.” Perfect. But, as you know, that assumes Republican extremists have a conscience. We both have reason to question that assumption.
