Now that the run for the presidency is in full gear, I am beginning to pay more attention.
But I have already found myself in a dilemma.
A lot of things in politics don’t make sense, but the positions of the Republican presidential candidates on critical issues are creating major cognitive dissonance for me.
Think about what they are saying.
They don’t believe human beings are playing a role in climate change or they don’t believe in climate change at all, or both.
They support repealing Obamacare, but they have no ideas about what to replace it with.
They want to carpet bomb ISIS as if that were possible, would be effective, and would not kill thousands of innocents resulting in even more hatred for the US in the Middle East.
They oppose the agreement with Iran to prevent them from developing nuclear weapons, leaving the U.S. with one option, starting a war with Iran.
On top of all of this, they have also said NO to the following:
– a sensible path to citizenship for the illegal immigrants living here…
– reasonable gun control laws..
– helping Syrian refugees by admitting our share of them to the U.S…
– public funding of Planned Parenthood based on propaganda videos
– raising the cap on Social Security contributions to make it solvent
– restoring the 1965 Voting Rights Act, our nation’s greatest civil right achievements
All the while they say YES to these things:
– spending more money on the military than the military itself wants
– imposing more restrictions on a woman’s right to choose
– cutting the Food Stamps budget even as it has proven to one of the most efficiently run government programs ever
– reducing business and personal tax rates as the state of Kansas did that has driven it close to bankruptcy
– promoting fear of Muslims as a threat to our way of life just as they did to prevent gay marriage from becoming legal
– restricting voter registration to prevent voter fraud that has been shown not to exist
Because of all these things they have said NO and Yes to, I have reached the following tentative conclusions.
If, as they say, these things are key to making America great again, may God please save us from being great again.
If, as they say, these things are key to us taking our country back, may God please save us from taking our country back.
If, as they say, these things are key to protecting our religious freedoms, may God please save us from more religious freedom.
If, as they say, these things are key to strengthening family values among our people, may God please save us from family values.
If, as they say, these things are key to having a president who will stand up to terrorists, may God please save us from ever having such a president.
As I said, in politics many things make no sense, but at this point I am having a very difficult time figuring what sense there is in anything these would be presidents believe in or want to do.
Maybe there isn’t any, that in fact what it comes down to us that what they say they believe and want to do is all nonsense.
