What is it that makes Republican try to cheat when they think they are going to lose an election?
Ken Cuccinelli, the Republican candidate for governor in Virginia, is running behind. Since Republicans control election boards across the state, they’ve decided to purge voter rolls to avoid fraud, especially in heavily Democratic districts. All with a straight face.
This is kind of thing Republicans are doing all over the country. In Florida, for example, a year ago they said the rolls were running over with ineligible voters. Turned out not to be true at all. But, then, when you’re trying to cheat, truth is not your ally.
In Elizabeth City, NC the local elections board with a Republican majority tried to prevent an Elizabeth City State University student named Montravias King from running for City Council. They said he was ineligible because he was a student and Elizabeth City was not his permanent address. The federal government decided this issue years ago when the Congress passed a law making a college address the legal residence of all students who wanted it to be. Had it stood the board’s decision would have also meant that all North Carolina college students were ineligible to vote where they went to school. The state elections board, also with a Republican majority, rescinded the local board’s decision because of the threat of a law suit it knew it would lose.
But that decision did not alter the fact that the Republican legislature had already passed and the Republican governor had already signed a law that includes a series of voter restrictions so onerous that the Justice Department has filed suit to have it overturned. Justice has filed a similar suit in Texas, and may end up doing so in several other states with Republican majorities in the state house.
It’s clear what is going on. Republicans have developed a two track approach to elections these days. If they don’t win, they just ignore the election results. That’s what the government shutdown was all about. They lost the presidential election with Obamacare as one of the major issues, so congressional Republicans decided to act as if they had won anyway.
The second approach Republicans are taking is to avoid having to ignore election results by doing everything they can ahead of time to rig elections in their favor. In other words, if you don’t think you can win fairly, then cheat.
Ultimately they won’t get away with it. Here’s why. Most Americans believe there is honor in losing fair and square and shame in winning by cheating. Just ask Lance Armstrong.
So no matter how much Republicans believe ends justify means, they are not only going to end up on the wrong side of history, they are going to end up on the short end of the stick in more and more elections.
That’s what I call telling it like it is! Well done & Thank You!
I think evidence of Republicans trying to rig elections in their favor in one way or the other is prevalent. I think they know that they are is serious trouble, and are willing to go to any lengths, including cheating, to try to save their skin. I suggest they try honesty and good ideas for the American people. They might be surprised at the results.
another example to support your right on the mark blog. In Watuga county NC near Asheville NC the repug dominated board of election decide it would be a great idea to combine 3 precincts into one. This one precinct has accommodations for 3500 voters not the 9,000.now also 35 parking places. These people are terrified of real Americans ans and the right to vote.
