A couple of weeks ago I reminded all of us of something Pete Buttigieg keeps saying, “Donald Trump is way less popular than he wants you to believe, and you are significantly more powerful than he wants you to think.”
Last Tuesday’s election proved how true that is. Trump lost, the nation won, and it’s just the beginning. What that says is that we, the People, will determine the future of our nation, not Donald Trump. Indeed, the power and significance of what happened this week simply cannot be overstated.
Turns out, the vast majority of us still believe in democracy, don’t want a king, don’t want the presidency sold to the highest bidder, don’t want ICE agents acting like the German Gestapo.
We don’t want a president who thinks he running a business where he’s the boss of everything and accountable to no one. We don’t want a fool who thinks he’s smart or a criminal who thinks the rules don’t apply to him.
Of course, MAGA voters made it clear they’re still with Trump and will support him no matter what. But the real news is, they lost. MAGA voters lost, big time, and victory over them tasted good, really, really good.
The message in their defeat should be clear. We don’t need MAGA voters to reject Trump in order for us to win. We don’t need them. We have sufficient power to rid ourselves of Trump and them on our own.
The task before us now is to hold firm through 2026 and beyond. We have one goal – to defeat Trump and MAGA Republicanism once and for all. It’s the only way to keep our country what it has always been, an imperfect nation, but one resolutely committed to basic freedoms and a government that serves the needs of the people.
The only way that won’t happen is for us to lose sight of our own power. It’s no different than what people have to do individually. We have more control over what happens to us personally than we often think. We have to choose control. It doesn’t just fall from the sky.
That is precisely what we have to do collectively as a nation. The only reason we will not free ourselves of the scourge of Donald Trump and Trumpism will be if we choose not to.
This is not about becoming cocky or over confident. It’s about continuing to exercise the people power we demonstrated in last Tuesday’s huge victories.
The days ahead will be as they are now, filled with Trump extremism that will make us angry and sick to the stomach. But last Tuesday showed us what we can do when we do what we can do – VOTE. And when we do, we not only can beat Trump, we can beat him down, and that is what he deserves.
In less than a year we have served notice to Trump and his MAGA cult that the end of their days has begun. And a year from now we will make Gavin Newsom’s prediction that Trump’s presidency will end in the 2026 mid-term elections a full-blown reality.
How soon and how far the mighty fall!
