Last week I wrote about Jon Mecham’s comment that this year’s election is about mature citizenship.
I want to remind all the Democrats and independents who are screaming the sky is falling after last night’s debate that the election is still about that.
So get a grip.
Biden did poorly, but that has nothing to do with his ability to govern. Trump lied every time he opened his mouth, and that has everything to do with his ability to govern.
If you think Biden should be replaced, you mistakenly believe this election is between Biden and Trump.
You’re wrong. A mature voter understands that this election is about one thing and one thing only – the Constitution.
I would go so far as to say that this election is about whether or not we, the American people today, are willing to ratify the Constitution all over again.
A vote for Joe Biden is a YES vote. A vote for Donald Trump is a NO vote.
There is nothing wrong with President Biden’s mental abilities. To be slow in answering questions, or hesitating or pausing because you stutter, doesn’t have anything to do with governing.
Biden answered virtually every question he was asked. Trump did not answer any of them. Not one.
There’s a reason for that. It’s because Trump doesn’t have any answers. He knows nothing about governing. He want to run things, be the boss, have loyal subjects who bow when he enters the room. He has no policies beyond his wild impulses that hurt the nation while benefiting him financially.
How can any one forget that he tried to overturn the last election? He proved he has no respect for the rule of law because multiple times he lost court cases he filed that said the election was rigged, yet he still tried to block the transition of power.
What else does anyone need to understand that the man is about power, not governing. This election is about having a president who will follow the Constitution and honor his oath of office.
A vote for Trump is the modern-day equivalent of voting against the ratification of the Constitution.
Were he to win, we would have a president free to do whatever he wanted to do without worry about the Constitution because he would know the nation had rejected it.
Democracy doesn’t need Democrats talking about how bad Biden did in the debate or, worse, that he should drop out of the race or be replaced.
It needs us to show mature citizenship, to understand that as bad as Biden did, Trump did even worse.
He offered no reason for anyone to vote for him. None. He did nothing but sling general declarations without a single fact or specific example to support his claims. And he lied and lied and lied.
It all came down to Trump saying, “Biden is the worst president in our history. I was the best, and I alone can save the nation again.”
That was it, and people are whining because Joe Biden was off his game? Really?
Why liberals are so mercurial, soft, and always ready to jump ship when trouble comes is an enigma to me.
But I do know the nation needs more from us, better from us. It needs us to see through the Trump show to the truth that this is our moment to ensure a majority of voters re-ratify the Constitution.
That is what the election is about and nothing more, and that is the only take-away from last night’s election worth talking about.

The future of our country is not decided by televised debates. We decide it.
This November it’s Trump versus abortion, Trump & SCOTUS versus democracy, Trump versus climate change, etc.
Absolutely, Rollie. And I still believe we will win. This might even wake-up some people to the Trump threat being real.
You are right, of course, Jan. I was afraid a “debate” would make Biden look bad, and it did. It was painful to watch, but we have to vote for “good” over “evil” and support Biden and democracy for the long run.
Yes, we do. Kay!
Thank you for helping me calm down. Last night was hard to watch.
It was, but I think most Americans will have also seen why Trump would be the disaster he would be. Biden stumbled, but Trump stood tall so his lies could be seen in plain sight.
excellent Jan. I would only add Biden is enough of a patriot and lover of this country, that if he felt he could not do the job he would not be running.
Absolutely, bro.
Jan, I considered calling you after the debate cause I needed a voice of calm and optimism. And with this post you made your best effort.
But it’s a new day and I find myself agreeing with NYT editorial board, Thomas Friedman, Ezra Klein and other prominent voices. Biden needs to withdraw. He’s been a really good President, but he shouldn’t make the mistake that Ruth Bader Ginsburg made, that being staying too long.
He was really bad last night. It doesn’t matter that Trump lied nearly every time he spoke. Biden was just bad, and will likely be just as bad if there’s another debate which will be even closer to the election and potentially catastrophic. He could bow out now and go down in history in a very positive way.
I wasn’t going to watch the debate but ultimately felt I needed to so that I could have a more informed opinion. Today, unfortunately, it’s impossible to un-see things. I sure wish I could.
Wilbur, calls for Biden to step down are exactly what Trump hoped would happen. The NYT didn’t call for Trump to step down when he was convicted. The Times has been anti-Biden for months. I stopped subscribing six months ago. Biden stepping down is not going to happen because it would be a disaster. Kamala Harris would want to replace him, but at this point she cannot defeat Trump. If she should be denied the nomination, Democrats would lose the black vote. Either way, Trump wins. The truth is, Biden is going to win. Trump did nothing to persuade anyone not already a Trumper to vote for him. Just the opposite, as poorly as Biden did, Trump was so much worse and I bet the polls will eventually show it.
l hope you’re correct. Trump has the morals of a cockroach and lied nearly every time he spoke. There’s no doubt in my mind who is the better candidate. Hopefully enough people will see that if it has to be those two.
Think democrats are panicking over nothing. What we saw was a cheap fake, Biden won and to believe otherwise is misinformation or disinformation. Or, Biden was at a huge disadvantage because the debate should have been held behind closed doors, where everyone knows he is the smartest person in the room.
Get the 51 former intelligence officers to put out another statement claiming the debate had all the earmarks of Russian disinformation.
Get 51 Otolaryngologist to put out a statement claiming Biden’s comments had all the earmarks of a cold.
Don’t give up on him
Just what people need to hear. Thank you for saying it!
thanks for sharing Jan. I did not sleep well Thursday night. I find it interesting that the media seems to be avoiding stating the obvious about the former guy. No one suggested that there is time to replace the top of the Republican ticket. None of the media commented on the fact that, Trump did not answer a single question in the entire debate. No policy no plans no ideas. I often wonder if this absence of reporting by the media is strictly out of fear of retribution on the longshot that Trump gets elected. My new favorite guy is John Fetterman. He came out after the debate and told Democrats to “calm the fuck down“. He’s coming from a good place to do that. all of the Democratic pendents said that John Fetterman should step aside after he had his stroke. If you watched him at the debate against Dr. Oz, it was a very tough debate to watch. After the debate, the voices grew louder to replace him based on his debate performance. He beat Dr. Oz by five or six percentage points. I agree with you Jan replacing Joe Biden right now would be a disaster! And I truly believe that he’s the only Democrat that can beat Trump.
I do feel that there is something truly amiss in the media right now. I can’t put my finger on it, and I don’t like coming across as a conspiracy theory, But I truly believe there is something not right.
Tony, I’m right with you on the media. One reason it has turned right may be that most of it is owned by billionaires who are Republicans. But you would think that the decline in readership of the WPO would tell papers they are making. huge mistake. They are no longer reporters, but commentators using news stories to interpret instead of reporting. The American media is bankrupt and I don’t see anything changing any time soon. There are a few exceptions, but very few.
Your analysis is spot on…I think replacing Biden at this point would be a gift to Trump…the Dems would have 2 months to introduce a new candidate before the election while Biden has 4 years of good performance in the White House to talk about..the border being the only issue on which he needed to exert better leadership..as long as Trump is on the ballot it’s good vs evil ..the constitution vs corrupt authoritarianism…the conversation needs to be directed to those choices
Art, it would be if the media would stop doing Trump’s bidding, but that’s not going to happen. Thanks for your comment.
1The more I think about last Thursday, the madder I get. We all know that President Biden is the sharpest person in the room behind closed doors. The White House staff has informed us the President is most lucid between 10:00am to 4:00pm. Why did they allow Trump to schedule the debate at 9:00pm? For the next debate, ABC should spring for lunch and have the debate from 12:00 to 1:30pm behind closed doors. Then ABC comes out, faces the cameras and tells us the Biden totally destroyed Trump. Also, the makeup guy who worked on the President before the debate last worked on AMC’s, ‘’The Walking Dead”, and that didn’t help either.
There was a poll that just came out and it said 27% of Americans believe President Biden has the cognitive ability to serve four more years. The same poll found that 27% of Americans are as dumb as a bag of rocks. Well I’m proud to be one of those 27%
So am I, and, like you, I keep getting angrier by the day at the press, and now with what the Supreme Court did, we MUST defeat Trump!!!
