- Jan is a full-time writer, having served as a college chaplain and seminary professor before giving up tenure to join his wife in establishing a progressive congregation in Minnesota. Since retirement thay have served as co-directors of the New Clergy Program at the Chautauqua Institution located in New York. Jan is the author of fourteen books, including "A Different Jesus: A Christian Theology Big Enough For An Inter-Faith World," published last year. His newest book entitled, "Evangelicalism and the Decline of American Politics"was published in October of 2017 by Cascade Books, academic imprint of Wipf & Stock Publishers.
